I know this isn’t a particularly original thought but January’s a pretty rubbish month to be starting with new resolutions, isn’t it? Well, it is in the northern hemisphere anyway. The crap weather, short days and long nights mean that any resolutions to do with exercise or diet are a nightmare because the instinct is to snuggle and stuff one’s face. I’d love to be out running more – especially as it’s not awfully long before the first of my half-marathons this year – but the rain and wind is combining with my general mid-winter biorhythmic slump to make me stay in instead. And that’s apart from the mysteriously sprained ankle giving me a much more valid excuse not to run.
I’ve decided to make January my ‘let it all hang out’ month, in a reverse of the parsimonious norm. I figure that I’ve been pretty good with my food intake, in particular in the latter half of 2013, and my fitness is pretty good, so I’m going to make January a completely guilt-free month as far as food and exercise goes. Come February, I’ll get back on the wagon but I’m not going to set myself up for a fall by setting myself resolutions at a time when I’m least likely to keep them.
