Much though I’m a Jakob Nielsen sceptic, it would be remiss of me not to link to his thoughts on mobile-optimised sites, having linked to the Guardian’s experiment in responsive design.

Build a separate mobile-optimized site (or mobile site) if you can afford it.

“If you can afford it” is somewhat glib, and neglects to draw out and address the practical aspects of maintaining separate sites, especially in terms of content strategy, management and development, and that’s before we start thinking about search implications. There’s lots more to disagree with but plenty of other people in the UX community have taken up the debate.
